Skin Rejuvenation with Chemical Peels
Chemical Peels will improve the appearance of your skin be encouraging cellular renewal and enhance the exfoliation process of the top layer of your skin, the Stratum Corneum. This resulting improvement of the quality of your skin improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. By re-balancing the skin, signs of acne, sun damage, scars, pigment changes and many other cosmetic dermatological conditions can be improved and many are resolved.
The two types of peels we offer for exfoliating the skin at Titchfield Skin Health are:
AHA - Fruit Acid Peels for very superficial treatments, sometimes known as a Light Peel
TCA Peels - Medium Depth Peels for skin exfoliation, also known as a Medium Peel
Common Benefits of a Chemical Peel
A chemical peel can restore a more youthful appearance to wrinkled, unevenly pigmented, sun-damaged, or blotchy skin. However, a peel cannot reverse the ageing process or completely remove deep scars. Wrinkled skin that is loose and sagging may also require facial recapturing with dermal fillers (available with us) or a combination of other procedures for the best results.
A skin peel effectively reduces or eliminates many skin imperfections including:
- Post acne scarring
- Other forms of scarring, either trauma or surgical in nature
- Rough patches and dry, scaly skin
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sun spots
- Irregular pigmentation
- Enlarged pores
- Dark circles
- Shaving Rash
Frequently Asked Questions
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), Light Peels or "lunch hour" peels are the mildest of the chemical peels. These peels include glycolic, lactic and fruit acid peels (AHA or Alpha Hydroxy Acids) or Salicylic Acid (BHA or Beta Hydroxy Acid). They encourage the loss of only the outer layers of the skin to smooth out fine wrinkles and/or rough, dry skin. AHA peels may also be used to improve the texture of sun-damaged skin, balance out skin pigmentation and diminish some types of acne scars. These peels are often repeated several times over a short period to achieve the desired results.
The application of AHA peels is relatively fast and simple. These peels are performed in the clinic. No sedation or anaesthesia is required, since you only experiences a slight stinging when the solution is applied. The treatment usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes but, we may vary the concentration of the chemical solution or the length of time it is applied to achieve the desired results.
The treatment will begin with a thorough cleansing the area to be treated. Next, we will apply the AHA solution, wait up to 15 minutes and then remove it. After the procedure, a recovery cream will be applied to optimise the nourishment of the skin and, instructions of how to best guarantee the results will be given. We will recommend (and even supply depending on the peel program that you undertake) specific medical grade Cosmeceuticals (Medical Cosmetics) to complement the peel program.
Trichloroacetic Acids (TCA), or Medium Peels, us a TCA solution to give a medium depth peel. This peel is generally used to treat skin with moderate sun damage, surface wrinkles and/or uneven tone or pigment abnormalities. Full-face TCA peels take approximately 2 to 15 minutes. TCA peels are also performed in the clinic.
Before applying the chemical solution, we will thoroughly cleanse the area to be treated. At first you may feel a warm sensation followed by a light stinging. We offer either single treatments or, ideally a program of 4 peels, 1 week apart with specific Medical Grade Skin Care, will optimise the results.
All chemical peels involve applying a chemical solution to remove the outer layers of skin so that a smoother, more evenly pigmented, glowing layer of skin can appear. There are two basic categories of chemical peels Alpha Hydroxy Acids or AHA's (AKA Glycolic Acid or Glycolics), and Trichloroacetic Acids or TCA's. Each type works differently and produces different results, the team at Titchfield Skin Health will discuss the treatments with you and together, you will decide which will be the best for you.
Our team will tailor the treatment to the needs of your skin. In general, the stronger the chemical, the deeper the peel; thus, the more impressive the results will be. However; the deeper the peel, the greater the signs that you have had a treatment will be noticeable. Some peels (Such as TCA peels) can impact on your social life as you will have mild peeling, similar to the effect you get after sunburn.
AHA and TCA peels for the full face generally take 10-15 minutes.
During the procedure most people feel a brief tingling or slight burning sensation, followed by a feeling of numbness or 'pins and needles'. Some even say the sensation is like an irritating itch! The sensation will vary depending on the type and depth of the peel. The AHA and TCA peels only really give symptoms during treatment.
Light peels: Alpha Hydroxy Acids (or AHAs) peels generally cause some flaking, redness and dryness, or skin irritation. These side effects diminish over time. They may appear as dry skin (So make up may not sit a smoothly during the initial post treatment period) or really mild sunburn. The post treatment recovery is normally short and most of the symptoms will go un-noticed and does not tend to impact on your social life.
Medium peels: Trichloroacetic acids (TCA) peels can cause redness and peeling of the skin. Although this peeling is not 'heavy' peeling, it can be compared to moderate sunburn-type peeling. The peeling process will subside within about 1-2 weeks. There is no need to take time off work to have this peel. However it may impact on your social life due to the extent of the peeling, so we will discuss planning this around any important occasions, especially if the recommended 4 week program is undertaken. That aside we need to measure you, the post treatment results are dramatic!
Following any peel, it is critically important that the skin be protected from the sun and we will advise you use no less then Factor 30 and preferably Factor 50 (a recommended product that is light and designed for the face can be provided) should be used on a daily basis. After the procedure, we recommend that the client stop smoking (if applicable) for at least a week as this decreases circulation of the blood in the skin, which can slow your recovery.
